This design comes from our Canadian customer, they even got a patent for it. We call it locbustr folding joint, which used in unique bicycles transportation, it offers maximum adjustability of the handle bar and easy to remove by a quick release and thumb nut.
Material and process
1. To make the item less weight, aluminum alloy will be a good choice and 6061-T6 is strong enough to the function. There are three aluminum CNC milled parts, as well as ABS washers and 3 stainless steel bolts.
The first aluminum part we call handle bar, check out the picture below.
The original material is an aluminum round bar, then hot forged the head into flat, later heat treatment to T6. Once it's hardened, CNC machining the bar into right dimensions, and drill the handle in deep to remove material as much as possible, that's how we keep it light. After that, CNC milling the flat head as drawings, the most important is the center hole, it has tight tolerance +0.05 after cutting the slot. The handle bar will be black anodized if necessary.
2. The second aluminum part is folding joint base.
It is also worked by aluminum 6061-T6, however it is easy and milled directly from billet, hot forging not necessary, just milled by 3 axis CNC machine.
The main important issue is the outer size of boss need tolerance _0.03mm, because it has to fit perfectly with the handlebar. If it's off, it won't slide in. After machining, we finish it with black anodize.
3. The third one is folding joint cover , the same material, that is 6061-T6, the process is just CNC machining from rod, very simple, the important is to laser customer logo after anodize black, make sure in correct size and direction.
4. ABS washers, just CNC turning from ABS rods, pretty easy.
Stainless steel bolts were purchase directly from market.
As all these are ready, all parts are assembled by instruction, see picture below.
Finally we worked in two versions, one has a shiny anodized surface, and the other is sandblasted with a matte anodized finish. After the customer tested them out, they chose the sandblasted matte anodized version as the final design.
